Meet Steven Walker

What is your role at Clarion?

Director and Financial Planner. Having been with the company for 22 years, I have become part of the furniture.

How did you take your first steps in to financial planning?

It was summer 1984 and I had just finished my first year at Manchester University studying English Literature and Medieval History. I needed to pay my way and got a job working at a large insurer in Manchester for the summer. At the end of the summer work I was offered a permanent role as a trainee and, having enjoyed the world of work more than the University (strange but true), I jumped at the chance and took up the offer. I am still hooked thirty-two years on.

What do you think Clarion offers its clients that makes us unique?

Dedication, creativity and a passion for the work that we do to deliver the highest quality solutions that really make a difference to a client and their family’s life.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in your role?

That there is no substitute for hard work and a need to continually keep up to date with legislation and tax changes.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a sports commentator, every sport, but especially football. It always seemed like the ideal job – watching sports and getting paid for what you enjoy whilst travelling the world. It’s probably a bit late now…

Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Without a shadow of a doubt my mother. In the face of extreme adversity, she has never faltered and always been supportive. A lesson I hope that as a father I have emulated to my children.

What keeps you awake at night?

Currently the leak from the roof in my bedroom whenever it rains – something that I am hoping will be fixed very soon!

Describe your perfect weekend

That’s easy. A warm summer day and a long meander through the mountains of the Lake District with friends, putting the world to rights and talking utter nonsense about the way things should be, but aren’t and never will be. Then a drink or two at the Queens Head, Troutbeck, followed by dinner. The next day we’d do exactly the same.

Spring, summer, autumn or winter?

Whatever the season I always hanker for the next one to come, so currently Autumn.
